The Journey (sequel to Welcome Home)
Preface
Several months passed. We are sitting down with the lawyer and Mr. Jones when the doorbell rings. I get up and answer the door. I’m startled by the figure standing in the doorway. She has a devilish grin on her face. I can only manage to whisper one word: “MA!”
~
Chapter 1: Surprise
Mrs. Anderson can sense something is wrong. She excuses herself from the table and comes to where I’m standing.
“Bryan? What’s wrong, honey?”
I can’t speak. All I can do is stare. My face is pale and I can’t stop shaking. By now, Beth comes over to join us. She takes a look at me and then the woman. Mrs. Anderson asks the woman
“Who are you? What do you want?” “Why don’t you ask Bryan? She replied.
“No, I want you to tell me!” Mrs. Anderson was getting angry.
“My name is Mary Freedman. I’m Bryan’s mother!”She says with a grin.
Mrs. Anderson goes pale. Now, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Jones make their way towards us. Mr. Jones tells Beth to take me upstairs. She grabs my hand and we walk upstairs in silence. When we reach my room, Beth swings around to face me and exclaims
“Why did she say she’s your mother? I thought you said she was in jail!”
By now, I’ve regained my composure and look into Beth’s deep blue eyes. I explain
“That is my ma and she was in jail I don’t understand this myself. How did she find me? How long has she been out?”
Beth thought for a minute, then replies
“I really don’t know, Bryan. Why don’t we go downstairs and find out for ourselves!”
I agree and we head towards the stairs. We are about to go down but, I stop in my tracks. Earlier, we were so upset about my mother’s appearance that we failed to notice the frightened toddler hidden behind the bulky cloak of her mother. Now the little girl was sitting on the steps, crying softly. I can tell Beth has spotted her because she runs down the stairs and cradles the girl in her arms. I walk down the remaining stairs and join her. The girl has stopped crying and is sleeping in Beth’s arms. I give her a questioning look but, she simply shrugs. I sit next to Beth and stare at the bundle in her arms. The child has sandy blond hair and appeared to be about 2 years old. As I was studying her, I noticed the bruises that covered her little body. I looked at Beth to see if she noticed them too. I can’t help but think of what a great mother Beth will be when she gets married. My thoughts are suddenly disrupted when my mother came storming into the room. She snatched the sleeping toddler from Beth’s arms and yelled
“Come on Missy! We’re leaving!”
Mr. Anderson comes running in the room and jumps in front of the door. He breathlessly exclaims
“You’re not going anywhere until you calm down or decide to leave Missy with us!”
Both Beth and I are startled by his request and his anger. Infuriated, Mary screams
“You already stole one of my babies, now you want my other one?! NO WAY!”
Mr. Jones walks in calmly and says
“I’ve already contacted social services. They’ll be here any minute with the police. I suggest you calm down and call your lawyer.”
“HOW DARE YOU!” By now, Mary’s face was beat red with anger. “Who do you think you are? You can’t tell me what to do with my child! I’m calling my lawyer!”
Mary started searching in her purse for her phone. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door and a voice exclaimed
“POLICE! OPEN UP!”
Mr. Anderson stepped aside and opened the door. A lady moved between the two officers and held out her badge.
“I’m Sapphire McHugh from social services. What seems to be the problem?”
“I’m Eric Jones. I’m Bryan's Social Worker.”
Mr. Jones introduced Mr. and Mrs. Anderson then, explained the current situation. Mrs. McHugh listened closely to both sides of the story and came to a conclusion.
“From what I’m hearing and from the bruises I noticed on Missy, it seems as if Mary is putting her child in danger. In order to determine this, however, we’ll need an expert’s opinion. I’m going to call my supervisor and see if we can get a child psychologist down here. In the meantime, Mary is to be separated from the child so no farther harm will be done.”
Mrs. McHugh nodded to the officers to escort Mary into the other room.
Chapter 2: Man on a Mission
An hour later, a short, stalky man showed up at the door. He introduced himself as Mr. Jefferson and went to speak with Mrs. McHugh. A few minutes later, he came up to me and asked if we could speak somewhere privately. I look at Beth and then at Mr. Anderson. I motion for Mr. Jefferson to follow me and we head upstairs. Once we are in my room with the door securely closed, he takes a seat at my desk and pulls out a legal pad.
“So Bryan, tell me about your mom. How did it make you feel when she showed up here today?”
I’m quiet for a few moments, trying to think of the best way to respond.
“Well,” I say “My mom is a drug addict and an alcoholic. She left us when I was nine. I was living with my dad. About two years ago, he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He died last year. Mom was in prison, so I was sent here.”
I suddenly became aware of the tears that were rolling down my cheeks and quickly wipe them away, feeling embarrassed.
“I know this is hard for you, Bryan. I’m sorry about your father.”
Mr. Jefferson moved to sit next to me. After a few minutes, I continue.
“I didn’t know she was even out of jail! How could she have found me? I fear that she’ll try to ruin this adoption and it's clear she's already hurt little Missy. She has bruises all over her! She’s my sister! I want to do everything I can to keep her safe!”
"Based on what I can tell, She had to of been out for at least three years. I'm surprised she hasn't come to find you before this." Mr. Jefferson said.
We continue talking for another hour and, by the time we head downstairs, Mom’s lawyer arrived. Mr. Jefferson picked up Missy and turned to Mrs. McHugh.
“I’m going to take Missy into the other room and question her. When we return, I’ll give my diagnosis. Beth, If you want to come, you’re more than welcome to join us. Missy will probably be more comfortable with you there.”
“Sure. Come on Missy. Let’s go talk to this nice man.” Beth said as she took Missy from his arms.
A half hour later, Mr. Jefferson, Beth, and Missy walk into the room. Mr. Jefferson makes a bee line for Mrs. McHugh, where they talk in hushed voices for a few minutes. When they were finished, Mrs. McHugh turns to mom and says:
“Mary Freedman, It has been determined that, based on your actions today and the obvious abuse of Missy, your child is unsafe in your care. If you wish to plead your case, a hearing will be scheduled. Due to the emotional distress you’ve put your child in, Missy will be taken into custody and remain here with her brother. You are not permitted to come within 100 feet of this house or either child. If you wish to see them, you must contact their social worker to schedule a monitored visit. These officers will escort you to your place of residence to collect Missy’s things.”
“NO!!!!”
My mother’s screams rattled my bones.
“My baby! She’s my baby! You can’t have her!”
Mom rushed to pick up Missy, but before she got to her, one officer restrained her while the other picked up the frightened child. As the officers escorted her out, mom yelled
“YOU’LL BE SORRY, BRYAN FREEDMAN! YOU’LL PAY FOR THIS!!!”
Chapter 3: Day Out
An hour later, we had the spare bedroom transformed into a princess paradise for Missy, complete with white dressers and a small vanity for her to play with. As soon as her stuff arrived, we began to sort through the many garbage bags full of old stuffed animals and broken dolls. We quickly realized she didn’t have many clothes and most of the toys were too destroyed to be of any good.
“Let’s go shopping!” Beth squealed with delight.
“I don’t know, Beth. Your dad has to go out for awhile and I have a lot of things to do around here. I don’t think we could get there and back in time for dinner.” Mrs. Anderson said.
“Mom! Please? Bryan can drive now and we’ll have dinner on our way back. We’ll even take Missy so you can get your work done. Please?”
“What do you think, Bryan? Are you willing to drive that far?”
Jumping at the idea of spending time alone with Beth, I spoke, almost too quickly.
“Sure! I’d be glad to!”
Twenty minutes later, we were packed into the car and pulling out of the driveway. Beth talked excitedly the whole way there, but I didn’t mind much. I couldn’t help but think that this would be the closest thing to a date that I’ll ever get. Oh, how I long to feel her soft lips brush against mine! As that thought crossed my mind, I blushed. We arrived at the Holiday Mall way too quickly. As I was getting out of the car, Beth wrapped Missy in a blanket.
“The first thing we need to get her is a coat. Then we’ll worry about the rest.” I said as I pulled the stroller out of the trunk. Beth plopped Missy in and tightened the straps. I tucked the blanket more snugly around Missy, and then we went to the “Baby Barn” to get her a coat. Beth insisted on a hot pink jacket with matching gloves. After that, we went to some other stores with equally dorky names like “Sally’s Shoe Stop,” “Lydia’s Little Ones,” and “Brea’s Boutique for Babies.”
Eventually, we finished up in the last shop and went to get some food. I was about to suggest that we eat at the food court when Beth suggested we head for home.
“Missy is already falling asleep. Let’s go through the drive-thru and eat on our way.”
I just shrugged and headed towards the car. As we stepped out into the darkness of the night, I caught a glimpse of movement by the car. Turning to Beth, I say
“Take Missy inside and call the police. Someone is trying to steal the car!”
Beth’s eyes grew wide with fear and said “What about you? You’re not going to fight them, are you?” “No, Beth. I’m going to try to scare them off. Now get inside!” I growled.
After I was sure she was safely inside, I picked up a stick and walked towards them.
“What do you want, punk?” snarled the guy, trying to open the door
“Get away from my car!” I yelled and swung the stick at his face. It broke in half, but he didn’t even flinch. Instead, he grabbed the front of my shirt and punched me in the gut. I tried to fight back, but he was too quick. Finally, the sirens sounded in the distance. The would-be robber picked up his tire iron, hit me in the gut on last time, and started to run. I grabbed his leg and held on, preventing his escape. As the sirens closed in on us, he tried to free himself from my grip, swinging wildly with the tire iron.
“FREEZE! PUT YOUR HANDS UP WHER I CAN SEE THEM!” shouted an officer that jumped out of the squad car. Quickly, his partner had the man in custody. Beth, seeing that it was safe, burst through the doors and had her arms around me within seconds.
“Oh, Bryan! You were so brave! I saw the whole thing from the store window. Did he hurt you? Are you alright?” Beth gushed.
“I’m….fine.” I manage to say, as I pull myself from her grasp. Before Beth could make a witty remark, an officer came up and said “Sir, I’m going to need you to come downtown so we can get your statement.” I nod and begin to stand, when a shooting pain in my chest makes me fall back, taking me with it into a sea of blackness.
Chapter 4: The Letter
When I open my eyes again, all I see is white. I lift my head up to look around and suddenly realize where I am. Over in the corner, Mrs. Anderson was staring out the window. I ask “Why am I in a hospital?” Mrs. Anderson spun around and raced to my side.
“Oh Bryan! I was so worried about you! As soon as Beth called, we rushed here as fast as we could!”
“What happened? Why am I here?” I ask. “You have a half a dozen broken ribs and a concussion from when you fell. But, don’t worry, you’re safe now.” Mrs. Anderson had tears running down her face. Before I could respond, Beth and Mr. Anderson came strolling into the room, Beth carrying balloons and flowers and Mr. Anderson carrying Missy. Seeing I was awake, Beth rushed over to the bed and threw herself into my arms. All I could think about was her safety, as she lay crying in my arms. I was oblivious to the stranger who walked into the room until he loudly cleared his throat. I look up and stare at the man. He looked around 30 years old and was 6’4”. He had a beer belly and reeked of tobacco.
“Bryan Freedman? My name is Detective Joe Bowmen from the police department. I’d like to ask you a few questions about what happened on Tuesday.” “Tuesday? Isn’t that today? What day is it?” I ask. “It’s Friday.” Beth said quietly. Suddenly, I realize why everyone was so worried. “I’ll do the best I can. I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to help, though.”
I spent the next half hour answering questions about the attacker’s description and what he was doing. When he finally left, I was totally exhausted. Mrs. Anderson saw this and quickly said good night, all the while ushering everyone else out of the room. “Please…let Beth stay.” I mumble helplessly. Beth pulled a chair up next to my bed and held my hand as I drifted into oblivion, dreaming of Beth in my arms again.
~
Within two days, the doctors cleared me to leave. Mrs. Anderson and Beth met me outside. When we got home, the mail was waiting for us. I settled myself on the couch while Beth ruffled through the mail.
“Uh…Bryan? You have a letter here.” She brought it over to me and set in on my lap. I stared at it for awhile, not sure what to do. Finally, I opened the envelope and looked at the slip of paper inside. I started to read it but, stopped after the first sentence:
“Bryan Freedman is summoned to appear in court on July 10th in Room B”
“Oh no!” I thought, “Not another court hearing!”
“Bryan?” Mrs. Anderson came into the room and was staring at me.“What’s wrong?”
I just sat there, staring at the paper. Mrs. Anderson came over and took the paper from my hands. A few seconds went by as she read silently. Finally, she put the paper down and looked at me.
“Bryan,” she said, “There’s nothing to be afraid of. It’s just a hearing to terminate your mother’s rights.” It took me awhile to process that. “This is great!” I thought to myself “I can finally be adopted after this!”
My mind was reeling at the thought. Suddenly, it hit me: today was July 8th! I had only two days to prepare! So much to do in so little time!
Chapter 5: The Hearing
“YOU’LL BE SORRY, BRYAN FREEDMAN! YOU’LL PAY FOR THIS!”
I awoke with a start. It took me a minute to see mom wasn’t here and that I was safe. It suddenly hit me that today was the 10th. “Oh boy!” I thought as I jumped in the shower “This is going to be a long day!” I get dressed and rush downstairs. “My! Don’t you look handsome?” Mrs. Anderson exclaimed , looking at my grey suit and red tie. “Thanks” I say sheepishly. “Missy will stay here with Beth and Mr. Anderson.” “OH MOM! Can’t I come with you?” Beth begged.
“Oh, ok! Fine. As long as Bryan doesn’t mind.” Beth looked at me expectantly.
“I don’t care.” I shrugged. Actually, I was delighted that Beth wanted to come, but I didn’t want them to know. A few minutes later, we were loaded in the van and took off. The 15 minute ride was silent because both Beth and Mrs. Anderson could tell I was nervous. When we finally arrived, I saw my mother being escorted by a tall man through the side entrance.
“Let’s take the main entrance” I suggest. We walk through the metal detector and head towards the elevators. We ride to the third floor and walk towards the designated court room. Mom was waiting for us. “Well, I see that you made it. Good. Just in time for me to make sure you suffer, Bryan!” she snarled at me. I cringe but say nothing. The Bailiff comes out and escorts us into the room. “ALL RISE! JUDGE GLENBROOKE RESIDING!” he calls out. Judge Glenbrooke walks in and sits behind her podium. Clearing her throat, she said “Well. I see we’ve had some trouble with this case, huh? Bryan, tell me about it.” I stand and tell her how mom showed up unexpectedly with my sister and made trouble. I also told her how we just recently found out that the guy who tried to break into my car was hired by my mother. The Judge asked me about my sister and how she was doing. She then asked me about the Andersons and why I wanted them to adopt me. Mom protested that she never tried to hurt Missy and she didn’t hire that lunatic. Just then, the man in question walked into the room and told the Judge how he was hired and even gave her the money mom used to pay him with. The Judge listened carefully to each side then, came to her decision. “Mary Freedman. I hereby terminate your parental right to Bryan Freedman. You no longer have any claim to him. I also terminate your parental rights to Missy Freedman as well. Bryan, I hope to see you again soon for your adoption hearing. Case adjourned.”
Mom, or I should say Mary, ran from the room infuriated. Mrs. Anderson looked at me happily and I smiled. We walked from the room, Beth and Mrs. Anderson on either side. Mrs. Anderson excused herself and went to call home. Giving me the keys, Beth and I walk happily towards the car. We walked out of the building and into the parking lot when a car came flying towards us. Beth, scared senseless, stood stalk still in the middle of the road. Seeing the car wasn’t going to stop, I quickly push Beth out of the way and take the blow from the car directly. I went flying across the pavement and hit the wall. Before I went unconscious, I saw Beth sitting up, confused, as the car sped away.
~
I wake up in the hospital again, confused and concerned. Beth is sitting beside me, holding my hand. “Beth? Are you ok?” I ask when I see the cast on her arm. Beth looked up and answered “Bryan! Why did you do that? You could’ve been killed!” I look at her quizzically, and Mr. Anderson said “Don’t worry Bryan! She’s just upset she couldn’t save you like you saved her.” Pouting, Beth said “It’s not fair! This is the second time you’ve saved my life and all I get to show for it is a broken hand!” I laugh and study the room. Noticing Mrs. Anderson’s absence, I ask “Where is Mrs. Anderson?” Beth and Mr. Anderson look at each other. “What’s going on?” I demand. “After the hearing, your mother sent a thug to the house to get Missy. He knocked me out and grabbed her. The police are still trying to find her. Don’t worry! We’ll find her!” Angrily, I try to sit up and rip the tubes off me. Beth saw what I was trying to do and grasped my hands “Don’t Bryan! You can’t do anything about this! Don’t hurt yourself anymore!” I saw the tears running down her cheeks. I brush her tears away with my thumb and say “Don’t cry, Beth. I won’t do anything you don’t want me to.” I hold her close until her tears subside.
I pray “Heavenly Father, you’ve protected Beth and the Andersons from harm. Thank you. Lord, I ask that you give the police guidance in how to find my sister. Keep her safe! Amen”
Over the next few days, Beth and I fasted and prayed unceasingly for Missy’s safe return. On the third day, Missy was found at the state border, cold and frightened, but not harmed. Mary was arrested and charged for kidnapping and battery, and was sent to jail for 20 years. Beth and I rejoiced at having my sister back safely. Soon after that, my adoption date was scheduled. On the day of the hearing, I sold my car. We got into the court room and the hearing took place. Judge Glenbrooke asked me if I wanted the Andersons to adopt me, and I shocked everyone by saying no. The confused Judge looked at me and asked “Why not?” I stand up and turn to Beth “Beth, please don’t cry like that. I love all of you dearly, but I can’t let your parents adopt me. Let me explain. Since the time we met, I’ve fallen in love you and I realized when you were almost killed by my mother, how much you mean to me. I can’t allow you to be my sister. I’m asking for something more.” I reach into my pocket and pull out the black velvet box. Getting on one knee, I open the box to expose the small diamond ring I just purchased this morning.
“Beth Anderson, Will you marry me?” I ask.
Beth, tears pouring down her face, throws her arms around my neck and answers “YES!”
~
Nine months later, Beth and I are settled into a small apartment two streets away from the Andersons. We quickly realized our family wasn’t complete, so we adopted Missy.Even though the journey was hard, I'm glad to see that God had a plan throug it all. Every morning, I thank God for bringing me to this wonderful family and for giving me the most wonderful wife and daughter!
Several months passed. We are sitting down with the lawyer and Mr. Jones when the doorbell rings. I get up and answer the door. I’m startled by the figure standing in the doorway. She has a devilish grin on her face. I can only manage to whisper one word: “MA!”
